Gretchen grew up in rural Dubuque county on a heritage farm. Row crops, horses, sheep, llamas, and various other animals shared the farm with Gretchen along with her parents and two younger sisters. She now lives in Story City with her husband, Jesse, and two kids, Evan and Madeline. Gretchen taught elementary school full time for several years before coming to Ag in the Classroom. She enjoys watching kids’ eyes light up when they learn something new and is always looking for new and exciting ways to connect their lives to agriculture.
Although Julie grew up in town, she has lived more than half of her life on a family farm as a farmwife and farm mom to 5th generation farmers. Julie and her family enjoy welcoming several groups including classrooms to their farm each year. As a former middle school teacher, Julie combines her two passions – education and agriculture as she assists teachers in implanting agricultural literacy in the classroom.

Ag in the Classroom is funded through county Farm Bureaus. The Farm Bureaus offer their generous support of our program because agriculture is integral to the lives of all, and the goal is to educate students and the public about agriculture, so they may become informed consumers, knowledgeable about their world and food.
